Types of Madeira (by grape Vareital)

Sercial : Best chilled as an aperitif or palate cleanser, this varietal is generally dry and very high in acidity. The best examples are always vintage wines that have had a chance to mellow to a warm and pleasing nuttiness. Whatever you do, do not try a sercial as your first Madeira.

Verdelho : Typically a medium-bodied wine, light and elegant, that was traditionally served with the soup course. Try it chilled both before and after dinner. It is sweeter than sercial.

Bual : A big step up the sweetness ladder, Bual is a full-bodied wine noted for its complexity of aroma and finish. It is the most elegant of Madeiras.

Malvasia : The richest and sweetest of Madeiras, Malvasia is known for the delightful balance between its intense lusciousness and bright and lively acidity.

Terrantez : A temperamental vine that was susceptible to disease. Following phylloxera's destruction of the vineyards, very little terrantez was regrafted into production, eventually making it become extinct, which makes a bottle a wonderful rarity. Medium amber in color the nose is vibrant with complex aromas. The flavor is rich and generous. Its lively acidity balances the wines richness. Its sweetness ranges from lightly sweet to medium sweet depending on age.
